Eureka! How many times have great ideas come from an epiphany that changes how things have “always” been done?
Take flossing, for example. It’s been around for a long time but essentially not much has changed. You’ve got waxed and unwaxed. Mint, unflavored, and maybe a berry flavor for kids. The floss is in a clinical white box with stark lettering. The major oral care companies dictate the offerings over the years and as oral care professionals, we just go with what is offered and recommend those to our patients.
But what if there was an option for floss that was truly different? A game changer that removes plaque better and in a variety of delicious flavors that patients love?
Dr. Chrystle Cu, the founder of Coco Floss, has created just that. She is a practicing dentist but in her early years, spent significant time doing hygiene and through the years, was able to see the shortcomings of the floss available to us. Not only were they bland in flavors, they could be very damaging to the gingiva. It was an issue that she saw frequently in her hygiene patients and the ripple effect was that patients were less likely to want to floss. Who wants to do something where there was a good chance of causing bleeding or pain? It is not exactly the best inducement for compliance. So she created a product that made flossing fun which increased compliance and also gentle on the gums.
I was recently able to get a hold of Dr. Cu and convince her to come on to the Nifty Thrifty FB Live event and wow, she is truly an example of the American entrepreneurial spirit. She was already a practicing dentist but through her daily interactions with her patients, she identified a problem. From that problem, she brainstormed for ideas to address the problem of patient compliance with flossing. Coco Floss was the result.
Coco Floss comes in a variety of flavors that is reminiscent of a candy shop with flavors such as watermelon, strawberry, and coconut. Flossing has never been so delicious!
Coco Floss makes flossing cool and fun. Rather than being in bland white, clinical packaging, floss can now join the ranks of other self care products that are not only made to maintain your health but to make it a fun and luxurious experience. It is sold in bright and fun packaging that makes floss fun. Instead of being something that you should do because your dentist tells you to, flossing is now part of a beauty (or self care, for men) regimen and that makes for better patient compliance.
Check out my chat with Dr. Cu and see the brains behind Coco Floss and how it was developed from prototype to a major player in the flossing segment with its products been sold in retailers like Sephora. It’s a great story about how ingenuity, hard work and the American Dream has created an amazing product and an amazing success story.
