This week I have the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Thomas Doan, current president of the Florida Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
In the past few years, there have been questions about organized dentistry and whether it was worth the ever increasing annual dues. Dentists wonder whether or not these organizations help dentists and whether it has become the very thing it was trying to combat – a regular cog in the wheel of politics.
Dr. Doan gives great insight about why organized dentistry is so very important to every dentist in this country. Sometimes we don’t see all the benefits because a lot of the activities are behind the scenes but what is most important is the support network that organized dentistry fosters. When we are practicing in our office, we are often isolated from our peers and lose sight of the world of dentistry outside of our practice walls. It can be a lonely path sometimes.
Organized dentistry is also a strong advocate on our behalf. Whether it is lobbying for increased Medicaid reimbursements or to advocate against laws that restrict the dentist’s autonomy, organized dentistry is our strongest voice. A unified voice can carry a strong message to the politicians who make decisions that ultimately affect the dental profession.
One of the nice perks of organized dentistry is the great meetings that are held all over the country. Dr. Doan talks about the upcoming annual meeting of the Florida Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry which will be held August 22-24 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, FL. They have a great line up of speakers this year that you definitely do not want to miss. This is a great opportunity to take a last minute vacation, get some great CE, and network with your fellow dentists!
