One of my most vivid memories of dental school was the gut wrenching anxiety I had when it came to doing my oral surgery rotations.
It seemed as if the Oral Surgery Department was the Mysterious Entity behind the door at the end of a long hallway where mere dental students did not tread. You had the 80 year old instructor who quizzed you about every part of the anatomy (while you had a universal quivering in your hand) and then the surgical resident who seemed to relish in your unease when trying to extract a tooth on a 6’4″ male with bones of steel who seemed like he was the long lost cousin of Clark Kent.
For most of us, that was how we saw Oral Surgery and to a certain extent, that is how many of us treat patients who need 3rd molar extractions. We are quick to pull out the referral pad and tell our patients that they need to go to the local oral surgeon across town. There is no thought about trying to do the extractions ourselves.
WHY?
Not only are you referring your patients, who are at your office to see YOU, to another provider but just think about all the production that you are sending to another provider. Being able to do just fraction of the wisdom teeth extractions that you refer out could equate to tens of thousands of dollars added to your annual production totals.
I recently had a chance to talk to Drs. Hendrickson and Wayland of Western Surgical and Sedation about their Third Molar Extraction course and how they’ve made 3rd molar extractions easier for the general dentist to do.
It was a very enlightening conversation because they really dispelled some of the unnecessary anxiety about doing wisdom teeth extractions. From proper case selection to having a consistent formula when approaching these extractions, they have made third molar extractions less intimidating for the general dentist to handle.
I personally took this course in Utah and it was great! I did wisdom teeth extractions before but after this class, I greatly increased the number of extractions that I did and approached each case with so much more confidence!
